There have been many high profile car accidents in New York City lately that resulted in the deaths of pedestrians, children and multiple members of families. The New York City Council is taking steps to reduce the incidence of car accidents that claim lives.
In an affirmative 45-4 vote, which is enough of a margin to only require Mayor Bill de Blasio to sign it to become the law, the council voted to reduce the citywide speed limit to 25 mph. The bill’s sponsor remarked in an interview with CBS New York, “Speed is the No. 1 contributing factor in an accident . . . . if you drive slower, you’re less likely to . . . get in a serious accident . . . [or] kill somebody.”
However, the new law does have its detractors. As one Staten Island councilman observed after voting against the change in speed limits, “[This]is about ticket revenue.” He does not feel that the broad scope of the law serves his constituents well, as their traffic patterns differ quite a bit from their Manhattan counterparts. Once signed by Mayor de Blasio, the new speed limits will take effect on Nov. 7.
Anyone who has been injured in a car crash in New York City can attest that some motorists drive with a reckless disregard for others on the road or hapless pedestrians or cyclists who cross their paths. This new law may slow them down and save some lives.
However, despite the new law, if you are injured in an accident on New York streets or highways due to the negligence of another driver, you may wish to seek compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering and other damages through the civil court system.
