Trucking accidents in New York can leave you severely injured

No one wants to get into car accidents (other than maybe stunt drivers). People take great care and effort to avoid situations that could lead to a serious motor vehicle collision.

Unfortunately for many people who drive or ride in paid car services in New York, you can't control what other drivers do on the road. When it comes to commercial truck drivers, a moment of distraction or a simple mistake could prove damaging or even fatal to people driving in smaller vehicles. Roughly three-quarters of all fatalities involving commercial trucks are of people in passenger vehicles, not the trucks themselves.

There are special safety laws in place to reduce the risk of commercial vehicle accidents, but the rate of these crashes does seem to be on the rise anyway. Truck drivers are generally held to a higher standard of sobriety, meaning that they can get ticketed and charged for driving with a blood alcohol content as low as 0.04 percent, half of what it is for other drivers.

Truckers are also required to carry and complete log books, which track their hours working and break times. These are meant to reduce the risk of exhausted drivers causing accidents by driving for too long without resting. Sadly, commercial vehicle crashes remain relatively common despite efforts to reduce these accidents.

Common injuries during commercial vehicle accidents

Some people involved in an accident with a commercial truck are lucky. They walk away with nothing more than minor scrapes, cuts and bruises. Many times, their vehicle absorbs the majority of the impact, leaving them mostly unharmed and in need or repair work or a new car. Other times, the people in the smaller vehicle are less fortunate.

Other common injuries include:

  • soft tissue damage, such as sprains or strains
  • broken bones
  • dislocated joints
  • spinal injures
  • head injuries

Any one of these conditions could result in thousands of dollars worth of medical care, to say nothing of the damage to the vehicles involved and lost wages. Surgeries, physical therapy, even emergency transportation and trauma care can quickly exceed basic motor vehicle insurance policy coverage. You could get left on your own, expected to pay for thousands of dollars of ongoing medical care because someone else made a mistake while driving a much larger vehicle.

In cases of head and spinal injuries, you could find yourself unable to return to work. Permanent disability is common among those who suffer traumatic brain injuries or severe spinal damage. In addition to affecting your motor function, these injuries could have an impact on your memory and ability to perform your job.

After a serious accident with a commercial truck, you should explore all your options for compensation before agreeing to anything, especially an insurance settlement.
