Construction site ladder safety is crucial

Construction workers often have to reach heights that are too far above ground to access without assistance. In these cases, they might need to use a ladder to get to their work area. It is imperative that anyone using or setting up on one of these devices has a good understanding about safety protocol to avoid falls from the ladder.

Ladder safety is imperative in all situations. To be clear, the burden of safety is put on the employers at the job site. The workers should be as safe as possible, but the construction company is ultimately responsible for ensuring that employees are safe as they are working. Here are some important points to remember about the proper use of a ladder:

Inspect the ladder

Nobody should ever climb a ladder without making sure that it is safe to do so. There shouldn't be any obvious defects or damage to the rungs or side rail. It should be positioned on a firm surface with at least three feet of the ladder above the area where the top is braced.

Using the ladder safely

Most ladders are meant for only one person at a time, so nobody should try to climb while another person is on it. You shouldn't use the ladder if you are dizzy or feel like you won't be able to keep your balance. Always wear shoes that have gripping soles on the bottom. Take your time getting up the ladder and coming back down to ensure that you have your foot placed firmly on each rung.

The three point rule

People who are climbing a ladder or standing on it must always have three points of contact. This means that only one arm or one leg is free at any given time. This makes it impossible to carry objects up the ladder in your hand so make sure that you are using a tool belt.

Avoid unsafe movement

Trying to overreach is a huge mistake on a ladder. Reaching too far to one side can cause the ladder to tip over. A good rule of thumb is that your belt buckle or belly button shouldn't extend beyond one of the side rails.

Any worker who falls off a ladder is at risk of being severely injured. These workers might require extensive medical care. Workers' compensation may be in order to help cover medical expenses and part of the wages the worker loses.
